Bent By Code - Sigradi 2024

Bent By Code is one of the 12 online workshops offered for the SIGraDi 2024 conference. SIGraDi 2024 main theme is about the application of biodigital intelligent systems in the world of architecture design and art, from a research, teaching and professional practice perspectives.

Led by Afshin Koupaei, the bent-by-code workshop will focus on the implementation of coding techniques in architectural design to fabrication processes. The workshop dives into developing Just-In-Time design to fabrication tools for architects.

Participants will learn the basics of programming and will practice solving the problems like a programmer. This enables them to generate valid code with AI coding tools even without having extensive coding experience. Participants will work on the development of a KERF bending component for wood, which generates design and machining information at the same time. Each participant shall develop their custom version of the code as well as a design configuration by the end of the workshop. The workshop aims to expand the capabilities of participants for designing and making through code and material behaviour and to assess the effectiveness of this approach in an architectural academic environment by evaluating the learning curve of the participants and their design outcomes.

Transforming the material behaviour into information, using this information as basic design and fabrication input, and generating design alternatives based on the basic parameters of materials and fabrication constraints are the objectives of this workshop.
